Magnetic-type gauges consist of three primary coils, with one coil placed at 90-degree angle to the other two. Coils form magnetic field which varies in direction according to variable resistance of sending unit. Sending unit is connected between the two coils. A primary magnet, to which a shaft and pointer are attached, rotates to align to this primary field, resulting in pointer position. This bobbin/coil assembly is pressed into metal housing with two holes for dial mounting.
The pointer of a magnetic-type gauge will remain in position when ignition is turned off, and will move to a new, correct reading when ignition is turned on again. Magnetic-type gauges do not require an Instrument Voltage Regulator (IVR). Also, magnetic-type gauges are not adjustable and cannot be recalibrated.
