Cooling System: Description and Operation

The cooling system removes heat from the engine created during the combustion process. The water pump circulates coolant through the cooling system allowing it to absorb excess heat from the engine. The radiator transfers heat from the coolant to the air flowing across it. The thermostat maintains a minimum coolant temperature of 190°F and allows for rapid coolant warm-up during cold operation. The cooling fan provides additional air flow across the the radiator when needed and is controlled by the Electronic Control Module (ECM) through the Integrated Relay Control Module (IRCM).
