Rack & Pinion R & I: Removal

  1. Raise vehicle. Remove wheels. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  2. Remove tie rod ends. See TIE ROD ENDS  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  3. Remove plastic shield from both inner fender wheels.
  4. Pull back steering column dust boot. Have an assistant turn steering column shaft until clamp bolt is accessible. Lock steering column.
  5. Paint aligning mark on steering column pinion shaft and intermediate shaft lower universal joint. Remove clamp bolt from intermediate shaft lower universal joint.
  6. Disconnect hydraulic lines from rack and pinion. Disconnect solenoid valve and pressure switch electrical connections.
  7. Remove 6 rack and pinion mounting bolts. Lower rack and pinion onto crossmember. Slide rack and pinion to right until left tie rod clears left control arm. Slide to left and remove from vehicle.
