Timing Belt: Installation
- If crankshaft sprocket was removed, install crankshaft sprocket and bolt. Ensure key remains in crankshaft when installing crankshaft sprocket. Tighten bolt to specification. See, at end of article TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table.
- If camshaft sprocket was removed, install camshaft sprocket and bolt. Ensure timing mark (No. 1) on sprocket aligns with dowel in camshaft. Tighten bolt to specification. See, at end of article TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table.
- Rotate camshaft so timing mark (No. 1) on camshaft sprocket aligns with timing mark on cylinder head, and timing mark on crankshaft sprocket aligns with timing mark on oil pump housing. See Fig 1.
- Install timing belt in original rotation direction. Install belt tensioner and spring. Temporarily position belt tensioner with spring fully extended, and tighten retaining bolt.
- Ensure timing belt tension is not slack at water pump sprocket and idler pulley. Loosen belt tensioner bolt, and allow normal tension to be applied on timing belt. Rotate engine 2 full revolutions in direction of rotation.CAUTION: DO NOT rotate engine in opposite direction of rotation, or belt alignment may change due to looseness in timing belt.
- Ensure all timing marks are aligned. See Fig 1. Tighten belt tensioner bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of article.
- Apply 22-lb. (10 kg) pressure, and measure belt deflection halfway between idler pulley and camshaft sprocket. See Fig 1. Belt deflection should be .30-.33" (7.6-8.4 mm).
- If deflection is incorrect, repeat steps 5) - 7), or replace belt tensioner. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Install sprocket baffle plate with curved outer lip toward crankshaft pulley (away from timing belt).
