Timing Belt & Sprockets: Installation
- To install crankshaft and camshaft sprockets, reverse removal procedure. Ensure No. 1 mark on camshaft sprocket aligns with camshaft dowel pin. Tighten sprocket retaining bolts to specification.
- Rotate crankshaft so the No. 1 on camshaft sprocket is aligned with mark on cylinder head and crankshaft sprocket timing mark is aligned with mark on oil pump housing. See Fig 1.
- Install timing belt in original direction of rotation. Install belt tensioner and spring. Temporarily position belt tensioner with spring fully extended and tighten retaining bolt.
- Ensure timing belt tension is not slack at water pump sprocket and idler pulley. Loosen belt tensioner bolt and allow tension to be applied to timing belt. Rotate engine 2 full revolutions in direction of rotation. Ensure all timing marks are aligned. Tighten belt tensioner bolt.
- Measure belt deflection half way between idler pulley and camshaft sprocket. See Fig 1. Belt deflection should be .30-.33" (7.6-8.4 mm) with 22 lbs. (9 kg) pressure. If deflection is incorrect, repeat step 5) or replace belt tensioner. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure.
