Removal & Installation: Camshaft: Removal

  1. Remove timing belt, camshaft sprocket and front housing. See TIMING BELT & SPROCKETS  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in this article. Remove rear housing. See Figure. Using dial indicator, check camshaft end play.
  2. Replace camshaft or cylinder head if end play is not within specification. See ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS tables at end of article. Remove rocker arms and lash adjusters. See, in this article, ROCKER ARMS & LASH ADJUSTERS  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Mark camshaft bearing cap location for reassembly reference. Remove camshaft bearing caps and camshaft.
CAUTION: Camshaft bearing cap location must be marked prior to removing bearing caps. Bearing caps are installed so that the arrow on the caps points toward front of the engine.
