4.9L Manual Transmission

  1. The shift indicator light is intended to provide the driver with optimum fuel economy. The system is controlled by engine speed and manifold vacuum. When engine speed is above 900 RPM and engine vacuum is greater than 5 in. Hg at part throttle, the shift indicator light comes on. This indicates the proper time to upshift.
  2. There is a slight delay (one second) in the light coming on under these conditions. On EEC-IV vehicles, the system is integrated into the EEC module. The light does not come on in top gear. If light does not come on, check indicator bulb, printed circuit and cluster connector power and tightness. If these check okay, circuit from cluster to transmission must be checked. See appropriate chassis wiring diagram in the WIRING DIAGRAMS section.
