Wheel Bearing Adjustment (DANA 28 & 35 Series Axle)

  1. Raise and support vehicle and remove wheel. Remove retainer washers from lug studs and remove locking hub body assembly from spindle. On Dana 28 Series Axles, remove snap ring, axle shaft spacer, needle thrust bearing, and thrust bearing spacer. On Dana 35 Series Axle, remove snap ring and axle shaft spacer. See Fig 1 and Fig 2 .

  2. Using Spanner Wrench (T83T-1197-B), remove outer lock nut. Remove lock washer from spindle. Using spanner wrench, loosen inner lock nut. While rotating hub/rotor assembly, retighten lock nut to 35 ft. lbs. (47 N.m) to seat bearings. Turn rotor and back off lock nut 1/4 turn. Now tighten lock nut to 16 INCH lbs. (1.8 N.m) and install lock washer.
  3. It may be necessary to tighten lock nut slightly more to allow lock washer hole to align with pin on inner lock nut; or remove lock washer and turn it around to align hole with pin on inner lock nut. Install outer lock nut and tighten to 150 ft.lbs. (203 N.m).

  4. On Dana 28 Series axle, install bearing thrust spacer, needle thrust bearing, axle shaft spacer and snap ring onto spindle shaft. On Dana 35 Series Axle, install axle shaft spacer and snap ring onto spindle shaft.
  5. Install manual locking hub body assembly, retainer washers, and wheel. Wheel to spindle end play should be .001-.003" (.02-.08 mm). Torque the lug nuts to proper specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  at end of article.
