Pinion Flange & Oil Seal: Installation

  1. Ensure pinion shaft splines are free of burrs. Remove burrs with fine crocus cloth if necessary. Lubricate area between seal lips. Using Drive Pinion Oil Seal Replacer (T79P-4676-A), install seal into carrier.
  2. Align marks on flange and pinion. Apply a small amount of lubricant to companion flange splines. Install flange and new integral nut and washer. Hold companion flange or end yoke and gradually tighten nut.
    NOTE: If seal becomes cocked during installation, remove it and install a new one.
  3. Rotate pinion while checking pinion bearing preload until original preload is obtained. DO NOT  back off pinion nut to reduce preload. See AXLE ASSEMBLY SPECIFICATIONS  table.
    NOTE: If desired preload is exceeded, a new collapsible spacer must be installed and nut retightened until proper preload is obtained.
  4. Remove oil seal replacer tool from transmission extension housing. Install driveshaft, aligning scribe marks. Apply locking compound to bolt threads and tighten bolts to specification. Fill axle with lubricant. Install and tighten filler plug.
