Removal & Installation (Bronco II & Ranger)

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove the steering wheel. See HORN BUTTON and STEERING WHEEL under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove the lower shroud. On tilt wheel columns, remove tilt lever and collar. Remove the upper shroud. On automatic transmission models, remove selector indicator cable by removing screw and plastic plug from column casting.
Remove 5 bolts holding the toe plate at bottom of column. Support the column and remove bolts holding the breakaway bracket to the pedal support bracket. Turn column to the right. Remove electrical connector from ignition switch. Remove bolts holding the switch and remove the switch.
Before ignition switch is installed, turn ignition lock cylinder to the LOCK position. To preset ignition switch, place a wire in the opening in the side of switch, pinning the switch in the LOCK position. Place actuation rod on switch and switch on the column studs while aligning rod hole with rod. Torque nuts to 3.3-5.3 ft. lbs. (4.5-7.2 N.m).
Ensure that switch is operating smoothly and all the functions are engaged. Turn the key through each position from LOCK to START. If all positions are not correct with key operation, see ADJUSTMENTS & CHECKS . To install, reverse removal procedures.
