Front Cover & Timing Chain: Removal

  1. On Tempo and Topaz models, engine must be removed from vehicle. See ENGINE article in this section. Remove oil dipstick.
  2. Remove accessory drive belts. Remove crankshaft damper bolt and washer. Remove crankshaft damper with Remover (T77F-4220-B). Remove front cover oil seal using Seal Remover (T74P-6700-A). Remove bolts from front cover and necessary oil pan bolts.
  3. Pry top of front cover away from cylinder block. Remove front cover and gasket. Check timing chain and components. See INSPECTION. Align camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket timing marks.
  4. Remove camshaft sprocket retaining bolt and washer. Slide camshaft sprocket, crankshaft sprocket and timing chain assembly forward. Remove as an assembly.
