Front Cover & Timing Chain: Inspection

  1. Clean gasket mating surfaces. Check timing chain tensioner blade and timing chain vibration damper for wear. Check timing chain deflection by rotating crankshaft counterclockwise to take up slack on left side of chain. Mark a reference point on cylinder block and measure from this point to chain.
  2. Move crankshaft in opposite direction to take up slack on right side of chain. Force left side of chain out with fingers. Measure distance between reference point and chain. The difference between the 2 measurements is the deflection. If not within specifications, replace necessary components. See TIMING CHAIN SPECIFICATIONS table in this article.
