Timing Belt & Sprockets: Installation

  1. To install crankshaft and camshaft sprockets, reverse removal procedure. Ensure No. 1 mark on camshaft sprocket aligns with camshaft dowel pin. Tighten sprocket retaining bolts to specification.
  2. Rotate crankshaft so the No. 1 on camshaft sprocket is aligned with mark on cylinder head and crankshaft sprocket timing mark is aligned with mark on oil pump housing. See Figure.
  3. Install timing belt in original direction of rotation. Install belt tensioner and spring. Temporarily position belt tensioner with spring fully extended and tighten retaining bolt.
  4. Ensure no looseness exists on timing belt at water pump sprocket and idler pulley locations.
  5. Loosen belt tensioner bolt and allow tension to be applied to timing belt. Rotate engine 2 full revolutions in direction of rotation. Ensure all timing marks are aligned. Tighten belt tensioner bolt.
  6. Measure belt deflection half way between idler pulley and camshaft sprocket. See Figure. Belt deflection should be .30-.33" (7.6-8.4 mm) with 22 lbs. (9 kg) pressure. If deflection is incorrect, repeat step 5) or replace belt tensioner. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure.
