Timing Belt & Sprockets: Removal

  1. Remove accessory drive belts. Remove right inner fender panel. Remove crankshaft pulley and sprocket baffle plate. Sprocket baffle plate is located behind crankshaft pulley. Note direction of sprocket baffle plate installation.
  2. Support engine and remove retaining nuts and dowels from right engine mount. Remove engine mount. Remove bolts from upper and lower timing belt covers. Remove timing belt covers and gaskets.
  3. Rotate crankshaft so the No. 1 on camshaft sprocket is aligned with mark on cylinder head and crankshaft sprocket timing mark is aligned with mark on oil pump housing. See Figure.
  4. Mark timing belt direction of rotation if belt is to be reused. Remove spring from belt tensioner. Remove belt tensioner retaining bolt and belt tensioner. Remove timing belt.
  5. If camshaft sprocket requires removal, hold camshaft sprocket and remove sprocket retaining bolt. Remove camshaft sprocket. If crankshaft sprocket requires removal, remove sprocket retaining bolt and remove crankshaft sprocket.
