Removal & Installation: Engine: Removal

  1. Disconnect battery cables. Mark hood hinge location and remove hood. Drain cooling system, engine oil and transaxle. Remove battery, battery tray and fuse holder.
  2. Remove air cleaner assembly and ducting. On turbocharged models, remove turbocharger hoses and pipes. Cover turbocharger openings. Disconnect engine and EFI wiring harness and place out of way.
  3. Disconnect electrical wiring at ignition coil, 3 sensors at thermostat housing and at oxygen sensor. Disconnect cooling fan electrical connectors. Disconnect transaxle cooling lines. Remove radiator and cooling fan assembly.
  4. On manual transaxle models, disconnect clutch release cylinder. Disconnect front exhaust pipe. Discharge A/C system. Disconnect A/C compressor lines and electrical connectors. Disconnect power steering lines at pump.
  5. Disconnect engine ground straps, heater hoses and fuel lines. Disconnect vacuum hose to brake booster and to charcoal canister. Disconnect vacuum lines to bulkhead mounted solenoids, and distributor.
  6. Disconnect transaxle electrical connectors. Disconnect speedometer cable at transaxle. Disconnect left and right drive axle shafts at transaxle. See FWD AXLE SHAFTS & CV JOINTS in DRIVE AXLES section. Disconnect transaxle control linkage and cables.
  7. Install engine lifting device. Remove engine mount bolts. Carefully lift engine/transaxle assembly out of vehicle.
