Removal (Lower)

  1. Remove fuel tank filler cap. Disconnect fuel pump relay electrical connector. Crank engine for approximately 10 seconds. If engine starts, crank engine an additional 5 seconds after engine stalls. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  2. Using Disconnect Tool (D87L-9280-A or B), disconnect fuel supply and return line. If hairpin type retainer is used, remove hairpin by first bending tab downward so that it will clear body. Using your hands, spread clip legs .125" (3 mm) and push legs into fitting. Pull hairpin retainer from fitting. See Fig 1.

  3. Remove upper intake manifold as previously described. Drain cooling system. Remove distributor cap and plug wires as an assembly. Position engine on No. 1 cylinder TDC of compression stroke. Mark and remove distributor assembly.
  4. Mark and disconnect electrical connectors from lower manifold. Mark and disconnect vacuum hoses from lower manifold. Remove fuel injector wiring harness. Note location of oxygen sensor wire-to-stud for installation reference and remove ground wire. Remove upper radiator hose, by-pass hose and heater outlet hose.
  5. Remove air cleaner bracket. Remove ignition coil bracket and set aside. Remove lower intake manifold bolts evenly. Remove lower intake manifold and gaskets.
