Fuel Gauge & Warning Light: Tracer

  1. If fuel gauge always reads "EMPTY", ground Yellow wire at instrument meter connector. If gauge does not read "FULL", replace fuel gauge. If gauge does read "FULL", proceed to step 2). See Fig 1 .

  2. Ground Yellow wire at fuel tank sending unit. If gauge does not read "FULL", replace Yellow wire between gauge and fuel tank sending unit. If gauge does read "FULL", proceed to step 3).
  3. Ground Black wire at fuel tank sending unit connector. If gauge does not read normal, replace sending unit. If gauge does read normal, replace Black wire between sending unit & ground. See Fig 2 .

  4. If fuel gauge always reads "FULL", disconnect instrument meter connector and apply 12-volts and ground as shown. See Fig 3 . If gauge does read "FULL", replace fuel gauge. If gauge does not read "FULL", proceed to step 5).

  5. Reconnect Yellow wire connector at instrument meter connector. Disconnect fuel tank sending unit connector. If fuel gauge reads "FULL", replace Yellow wire between fuel gauge and sending unit.
  6. If fuel gauge is not accurate, disconnect sending unit connector. Connect leads of Rotunda Gauge Tester (021-00038) to Yellow wire of sending unit connector and the other lead to ground.
  7. Turn ignition on, check that fuel gauge needle indicator displays correct resistance values. See Fig 4 . Inspection should continue for 2 minutes. If gauge readings are incorrect, replace fuel gauge. If readings are correct, proceed to FUEL GAUGE SENDING UNIT  test.
