If frequent engine stalls occur on low mileage units, it is possible that a fuel starvation condition is the cause. The in-tank fuel pump/pickup screen assembly may be too close to the bottom of the fuel tank. The emission system vacuum can draw the bottom of the fuel tank up to contact the fuel pickup screen, shutting off fuel flow to the engine. After a short period of time (when the vacuum releases the tank bottom from contact with the fuel pump/pickup screen) the engine can be re-started, and will run until the tank bottom is again drawn up, shutting off fuel. This condition will occur most frequently when the fuel tank is less than one-half full.
To determine the possibility of a "bottomed" fuel pump/pickup screen in the fuel tank, do the following procedure:
1. Start and run the engine until it stalls.
2. Repeat Step 1 with the fuel filler cap removed.
^ If the engine stall condition does not occur, proceed to Step 3.
^ If the engine continues to stall with the filler cap removed, check the fuel delivery at the fuel pump discharge hose in front of the fuel tank. If the fuel delivery is good at the discharge hose, the condition cause is in another part of the fuel or electrical system.
^ If fuel delivery is not acceptable at the fuel pump discharge hose and there is electrical power at the pump, proceed to Step 3.
3. Remove the fuel tank from the vehicle, and remove the fuel sender and pump assembly from the fuel tank, per Shop Manual, Section 25-50.

^ Clamp the sender/pump assembly to a table top with two (2) "C" clamps. Refer to Figure 25.
^ Hold the three tubes at the 90~ bend with one hand (at Area A, to prevent bending), while pushing down on the pump/pickup screen at point B to bend the tube to final reworked height l2.30/12.40 inch dimension, shown in Figure 25.
NOTE: The final reworked height must be 12.30/12.40 inches (from top of cover plate to underside of filter as shown in Figure 25). Also, assure that the pickup moves straight down when pushing at point B so that the operating angle of the pump is not changed.
4. Install the fuel sender and pump assembly in the fuel tank, and install the fuel tank in the vehicle per Shop Manual, Section 25-50.
5. Start and run the engine to verify that the fuel starvation condition has been eliminated.
