The Direct Clutch Return Spring tension has been increased in later units. This was done to improve the 2-3 shift feel, and for better release of the direct clutches on a down-shift.

The new retainer with springs will retro-fit on earlier models, and is an advised replacement and up-date.

If excessive heat has been present in the direct clutches, be sure to replace the retainer with springs. This will help to insure against a repeat direct clutch failure.
