GENERAL INFORMATION

An Emission Systems Required Maintenance Chart for each truck model is listed on the following pages. The Emission Systems Required Maintenance Chart lists the items required to maintain the vehicle emission systems at levels determined by the Federal Government (Environmental Protection Agency). Refer to the appropriate Sections of the Engine Shop Manual and the Engine/Emission Diagnosis Manual for the Maintenance Procedures, which are related to the item listed on the maintenance schedule. Use these procedures to perform the required emission system maintenance items listed on the maintenance charts.

FIG. 1 - Typical Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal-Light Truck:

Maintenance service adjustments must conform to specifications contained in the Engine/Emissions Diagnosis Manual, to those listed in the Truck Performance Specifications Book or shown on the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal which is located on or near the engine (Fig. 1) or the emissions systems may become inoperative.
If an engine is equipped with a "Dura-Spark" ignition system and any high tension ignition wire was detached from a spark plug, the distributor cap or the coil to perform a maintenance operation, Silicone Dielectric Compound (D7AZ-19A331-A, (ESA-MIC171-A) or
equivalent) must be applied to the boot before re-connection. Using a small clean screw driver, apply a thin layer of Silicone Dielectric Compound on the entire interior surface of the boot.

As a safety precaution, before starting the engine to perform maintenance, make sure the transmission selector is in Park (Automatic Transmission) or Neutral (Manual Transmission), the parking brake set and the wheels blocked.

IN GENERAL, MAINTENANCE REPLACEMENT, OR SERVICE OF THE EMISSION CONTROL DEVICES OR SYSTEMS IN YOUR NEW FORD VEHICLE OR FORD ENGINE MAY BE PERFORMED AT YOUR EXPENSE BY ANY AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR ESTABLISHMENT OR INDIVIDUAL USING AUTOMOTIVE PARTS EQUIVALENT TO THOSE WITH WHICH YOUR VEHICLE OR ENGINE WAS ORIGINALLY EQUIPPED. IF OTHER THAN FORD OR MOTORCRAFT SERVICE PARTS OR FORD AUTHORIZED, REMANUFACTURED PARTS ARE USED FOR MAINTENANCE REPLACEMENTS OR FOR THE SERVICE OF COMPONENTS AFFECTING EMISSION CONTROL, THE OWNER SHOULD ASSURE HIMSELF THAT SUCH PARTS ARE WARRANTED BY THEIR MANUFACTURER TO BE EQUIVALENT TO GENUINE FORD MOTOR COMPANY PARTS IN PERFORMANCE
AND DURABILITY. FORD, HOWEVER, ASSUMES NO LIABILITY WHATSOEVER, UNDER THE EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM OR ANY OTHER WARRANTY WITH RESPECT TO PARTS OTHER THAN FORD SERVICE PARTS OR FORD AUTHORIZED REMANUFACTURED PARTS, THE EMISSIONS CONTROL SYSTEMS WARRANTY COVERS THE EMISSION CONTROL DEVICES AND SYSTEMS. PLEASE CONSULT YOUR WARRANTY FACTS BOOKLET FOR WARRANTY INFORMATION.

Maintenance Schedule Applicable to Bronco, E-150, E-250, E-350 and F-150, F-250, F-350 Trucks

Four maintenance schedules are specified for the 1984 model Bronco, Econoline and F Series trucks. They are identified by the letters B, E, F and L. The application of the various maintenance schedules are as follows:

Catalyst Equipped Vehicles Require Unleaded Fuel Only

Maintenance Schedule "B" Gasoline Engine Equipped Vehicles (Under 8500 Pounds GVW)

The following catalyst equipped vehicles, designated for use with "Unleaded Fuel Only" should be maintained according to Maintenance Schedule "B".

^ F-150
^ F-250 except "Heavy Duty"
^ E-150

Non-Catalyst Equipped Vehicles Use Leaded Fuel

Maintenance Schedule "E" and "F" Gasoline Engine Equipped Vehicles (Over 8500 Pounds GVW)

Most 1985 non catalyst equipped vehicles are built with engines which are certified as complying with 1985 emissions standard. Maintenance Schedule "F" is specified for these vehicles. Certain 1985 non-catalyst equipped vehicles however, will be built with engines which are certified to meet 1984 emissions standards. Maintenance Schedule "E" is specified for these
vehicles. Refer to the Vehicle Emission Control Information (VECI) decal to determine the proper emission standards conformance designation on the following applications.

^ Heavy Duty F-250

^ F-350

^ E-250 Club Wagon

^ E-350

Maintenance Schedule "L" Gasoline Engine Equipped Vehicles (Over/ Under 8500 Pounds GVW)

The "L" maintenance schedule is used for the following non-catalyst "Canadian Only" Leaded Fuel vehicles built with 5.8L (351 CID) engines and 2V carburetors or 4.9L (300 CID) engines.

^ F-150/F-250/F-350

^ E-150/E-250/E-350

Maintenance Schedule "E" - Diesel Engine Equipped Vehicles.

This maintenance schedule is used for the following Diesel Engine Equipped Vehicles:

^ F-350 (4x2 and 4x4)

^ Heavy Duty E-250

^ E-350

Maintenance Schedule Applicable to Medium Duty and Heavy Duty Trucks Over 8,500 Pounds GVW

Maintenance Schedule "E" is specified for these vehicles. Refer to the Vehicle Emission Control Information (VECI) decal to determine the proper emission standards conformance designation on these applications.
