Removal & Installation: Engine

  1. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner and duct assembly. Disconnect negative battery cable at engine. Disconnect positive battery cable at battery.
  2. Mark location of hood hinges and remove hood. Disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses from engine. Remove radiator shroud attaching screws.
  3. Remove upper radiator supports. Remove cooling fan and fan shroud. Remove radiator. Remove oil fill cap. Disconnect primary wire from distributor.
  4. Disconnect wires from oil pressure sending unit and water temperature sending unit. Disconnect wires from alternator and starter.
  5. Disconnect accelerator cable and kickdown rod from carburetor. Remove air conditioning compressor from bracket and position aside with hoses attached.
  6. Disconnect power brake vacuum hose. Disconnect chassis fuel line from fuel pump. Disconnect heater hoses from engine. Remove engine mount nuts.
  7. Raise vehicle on hoist. Drain crankcase. Remove starter motor. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold. Remove dust cover from transmission.
  8. On vehicles with manual transmissions, remove flywheel housing lower attaching bolts and clutch slave cylinder.
  9. On vehicles with automatic transmissions, remove converter-to-flywheel bolts, then remove converter housing lower attaching bolts.
  10. On all vehicles, lower vehicle from hoist. Support transmission with jack. Remove flywheel housing-to-converter housing attaching bolts.
  11. Attach an engine lifting device to engine. Lift engine out of vehicle.
