Steering Gear - KOYO Manual: Adjustments: Preliminary
- Worm bearing preload must be adjusted before the meshload. While meshload may be adjusted with the steering gear installed, worm preload cannot be adjusted in the vehicle.
- Disconnect the Pitman arm at the ball stud. Lubricate the wormshaft seal with a drop of automatic transmission fluid. Remove the horn pad. Turn the steering wheel slowly to one stop.
- Place an INCH lb. torque wrench on the steering wheel nut. Measure the torque required to rotate the steering wheel at a constant speed for approximately 1 1/2 turns.
- If preload is not within 2-6 INCH lbs. (22-68 N.cm) on Bronco II and Ranger or 5-9 INCH lbs. (60-100 N.cm) on Pickup and Van, readjust the preload. If preload is within specifications, check meshload.
- Place an INCH lb. torque wrench on the steering wheel nut. Measure the highest torque required to rotate the steering wheel back and forth approximately 90° either way across the center position.
- The meshload must be 4-10 INCH lbs. (45-113 N.cm) on Bronco II and Ranger or 9-14 INCH lbs. (102-158 N.cm) on Pickup and Van. Meshload must also be at least 2 INCH lbs. (23 N.cm) over the preload. Meshload can be adjusted in the vehicle.
