Vacuum Pump & Reservoir
Diesel engines do not produce manifold vacuum; therefore, all models are equipped with a belt-driven vacuum pump. The pump produces vacuum for operation of power brake and speed control systems. A brake/low-vacuum warning light on the instrument panel glows if system vacuum is not adequate to operate brake booster or other vacuum systems. The warning light remains on after engine start-up until vacuum builds up in system.
- The vacuum pump is required to operate accessories. The reservoir is a holding tank for vacuum. Test pump and reservoir periodically.
- Locate reservoir on right fender apron. Disconnect Grey stripe (2.2L) vacuum hose at speed control servo and connect hose to vacuum gauge. Start engine and observe vacuum gauge.
- Vacuum should be 20-23" Hg. If not to specification, check for leaking vacuum hose or defective vacuum pump.
- After vacuum has stabilized above 20" Hg, turn engine off. Vacuum should hold steady. After 24 hours, vacuum should be a minimum 15" Hg. If vacuum fails to hold, replace vacuum reservoir.
