Vacuum Pump & Reservoir

Diesel engines do not produce manifold vacuum; therefore, all models are equipped with a belt-driven vacuum pump. The pump produces vacuum for operation of power brake and speed control systems. A brake/low-vacuum warning light on the instrument panel glows if system vacuum is not adequate to operate brake booster or other vacuum systems. The warning light remains on after engine start-up until vacuum builds up in system.

  1. The vacuum pump is required to operate accessories. The reservoir is a holding tank for vacuum. Test pump and reservoir periodically.
  2. Locate reservoir on right fender apron. Disconnect Grey stripe (2.2L) vacuum hose at speed control servo and connect hose to vacuum gauge. Start engine and observe vacuum gauge.
  3. Vacuum should be 20-23" Hg. If not to specification, check for leaking vacuum hose or defective vacuum pump.
  4. After vacuum has stabilized above 20" Hg, turn engine off. Vacuum should hold steady. After 24 hours, vacuum should be a minimum 15" Hg. If vacuum fails to hold, replace vacuum reservoir.
