Ranger (2.8L)

  1. Disconnect or remove all thermactor components that may interfere with engine removal. Disconnect negative battery cable from battery.
  2. Drain cooling system. Remove hood. Remove air cleaner and intake duct assembly. Disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses from radiator.
  3. Remove fan shroud attaching bolts and position shroud over fan. Remove radiator and shroud. Remove alternator from engine and position aside.
  4. Disconnect alternator ground wire from engine block. If equipped, remove air conditioning compressor and power steering pump and position aside.
  5. Disconnect heater hoses from engine. Remove ground wires from engine block. Disconnect and plug fuel tank line at fuel pump.
  6. Disconnect throttle cable linkage at carburetor and intake manifold. Disconnect primary wires from distributor.
  7. If equipped, remove power brake vacuum hose from engine. Disconnect wiring from oil pressure and engine temperature sending units.
  8. Raise vehicle on hoist. Disconnect exhaust pipes from exhaust manifolds. Remove starter. Remove front engine mount nuts and through bolts.
  9. On vehicles with automatic transmissions, remove the converter inspection cover and disconnect flywheel from converter.
  10. Remove kickdown rod. Remove converter housing-to-engine bolts. Remove adapter plate-to-converter housing bolt.
  11. On vehicles with manual transmissions, remove clutch linkage. On all vehicles, lower vehicle from hoist. Attach a lifting device to engine. Remove engine from vehicle.
