F Pickup (3.8L)

  1. Drain cooling system. Disconnect negative battery cable from battery. Disconnect under hood wiring connector, if equipped.
  2. Mark position of hood hinges and remove hood. Remove air cleaner assembly with intake duct and heat tube attached. Remove fan shroud and cooling fan.
  3. Disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses from radiator. Loosen drive belt idler pulley and remove water pump pulley.
  4. Disconnect thermactor hose from downstream air tube check valve. Remove downstream air tube bracket attaching bolt at rear of right cylinder head.
  5. Remove ignition coil secondary wire from coil. If equipped with power steering, remove pump mounting bracket bolts.
  6. Without disconnecting hoses, set pump and bracket assembly aside. If equipped with A/C, remove compressor mounting bracket bolts.
  7. Without disconnecting hoses, position compressor assembly aside. Remove alternator and position aside. Disconnect heater hoses from heater.
  8. If equipped with speed control, disconnect servo chain at carburetor, remove servo bracket attaching screws and remove servo.
  9. Disconnect vacuum hoses and wiring as required. Remove engine ground strap. Disconnect transmission linkage at carburetor.
  10. Disconnect accelerator cable and remove cable bracket. Disconnect fuel supply line and PCV hose at carburetor. Remove carburetor.
  11. With EGR spacer and gasket in position, attach engine lifting plate (T75T-6000-A) over carburetor studs and tighten nuts.
  12. Use all studs to mount lifting plate to prevent damage to aluminum intake manifold. When using lifting plate, do not remove engine with transmission attached.
  13. Raise vehicle and drain crankcase. Disconnect and plug flexible fuel line at fuel pump. Remove transmission converter housing dust shield.
  14. Remove flywheel-to-torque converter nuts. Remove starter and transmission oil cooler line clips. Remove exhaust pipes from exhaust manifolds.
  15. Remove transmission-to-engine lower attaching bolts. Remove engine mount-to-crossmember nuts. Lower vehicle from hoist.
  16. Position a jack under transmission to support transmission assembly. Remove upper transmission-to-engine bolts. Protect radiator with plywood.
  17. Raise engine and carefully pull out of engine compartment. While lifting engine from vehicle, avoid bending or damaging rear cover plate.
