Camshaft End Thrust

CAUTION: Prying against aluminum/nylon gear, with valve train load on camshaft, can break or damage the gear. When checking camshaft end thrust, back off valve lash adjusters or loosen rocker arm shaft to remove load from camshaft.
  1. Remove engine front cover. Push camshaft toward rear of engine. Install a dial indicator so that indicator plunger is on camshaft gear attaching bolt.
  2. Zero dial indicator. Using a large screwdriver between camshaft gear and engine block, pull camshaft forward and release it. Read dial indicator.
  3. If dial indicator reading is greater than .009" (.29 mm), replace thrust plate at rear of engine block. Remove dial indicator from engine. Reinstall engine front cover.
