Module, Onboard Charging (OBCM): Operation

The OBCM is responsible for monitoring and controlling the plug-in power supply to charge the High Voltage Battery System of the Vehicle. The OBCM assembly incorporates four inverter assemblies containing voltage rectifiers to convert AC and DC voltage. The OBCM also contains three charger assemblies with transformers to boost the input voltage up to 400V for proper High Voltage Battery System charging. These components are packaged together as an assembly and are located in the under-hood compartment mounted just above the electric drive unit. When the EVSE is connected to the vehicle, the OBCM converts the available AC voltage to DC voltage, then steps up the voltage level for proper charging. Based on commands from the EVCU, the OBCM regulates voltage and current flow to maintain the proper state of charge (SOC) and state of health (SOH) of the High Voltage Battery System. The Vehicle is equipped with a Charge Indicator Lamp, that illuminates when the EVSE is connected to the Vehicle and provides a highly visible indication of the Vehicle's Battery charge level and charge progression. The Charge Indicator Lamp is divided into five segments, each segment represents a 20% portion of the state of charge. each segment will flash as the Vehicle is charging in that specific segment, until all the lamps are illuminated and 100% charge is reached. All five segments will turn off 15 minutes after full charge has been achieved.

The Charge Indicator Lamp also provides diagnostic fault detection, this is done by flashing the center lamp at a specified rate. When a fault is present, the center lamp will flash until:

The Charge Indicator also indicates managed or delayed charging status. starting with the segment on the right, or passenger side of the Vehicle, each segment will flash sequentially in turn until all five segments have flashed.
