Section 3 (Instrument Cluster (Service Information) 500 - Electric): Removal
To avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbag, seat belt tensioner, impact sensor or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment.
On vehicles equipped with the high voltage system, disconnecting the 12-volt battery negative cable alone will not power down the 12-volt system. You must perform the 12-volt Power Down procedure before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- On vehicles equipped with the high voltage system, power down the 12 volt system, Refer to 12-VOLT POWER DOWN .
- Disconnect and isolate the negative cable from the battery.
- Remove the cluster bezel (2) from the instrument panel. Refer to BEZEL, INSTRUMENT CLUSTER, REMOVAL .
- Lower the steering column to the most downward position setting.
- Remove the four screws that secure the instrument cluster (1) mounting tabs to the instrument panel.
- Tilt the top of the instrument cluster back and lift it upward far enough to access and disconnect the instrument panel wire harness connector from the back of the cluster housing.
- Remove the instrument cluster from the instrument panel.
