The Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) uses both non-switched and ignition switched sources of battery current so that some of its features remain operational at any time, while others may only operate with the ignition switch in the ON position. When the ignition switch is turned to the ON position, the EVIC display will return to the last function being displayed before the ignition was turned to the OFF position.
The microcontroller-based EVIC hardware and software uses various inputs to control the gauges and indicators visible on the face of the Instrument Cluster (IC) (also known as the Instrument Panel Cluster/IPC). Some of these inputs are hardwired, but most are in the form of electronic messages that are transmitted by other electronic modules over the Controller Area Network (CAN) data bus. The hardwired circuits between components related to the EVIC may be diagnosed using conventional diagnostic tools and procedures. Refer to the appropriate wiring information. The wiring information includes wiring diagrams, proper wire and connector repair procedures, details of wire harness routing and retention, connector pin out information and location views for the various wire harness connectors, splices and grounds.
However, conventional diagnostic methods will not prove conclusive in the diagnosis of the EVIC or the electronic controls or communication between modules and other devices that provide some features of the EVIC. The most reliable, efficient, and accurate means to diagnose the EVIC or the electronic controls and communication related to EVIC operation requires the use of a diagnostic scan tool.
