Pads, Brake, Rear: Installation

NOTE:

If a rear caliper piston in this vehicle needs to be seated in its bore, Rear Caliper Piston Retractor (special tool #8807, Retractor, Rear Caliper Piston) must be used. If an attempt is made to force the piston back in the bore with a clamp or other method, damage will occur to the Integrated Park Brake.

  1. Seat (bottom) the caliper piston in the bore as follows:
    1. Assemble a 3/8 in. drive ratchet handle and an extension (3).
    2. Insert the extension through Rear Caliper Piston Retractor (special tool #8807-1, Assembly, Forcing Screw) (2).
    3. Place Rear Caliper Piston Retractor (special tool #8807-2, Adapter) (1) on the end of the extension.
    4. Insert lugs on Rear Caliper Piston Retractor (special tool #8807-2, Adapter) into notches in face of caliper piston (5).
    5. Thread the screw drive on Rear Caliper Piston Retractor (special tool #8807-1, Assembly, Forcing Screw) down until it contacts the top of Rear Caliper Piston Retractor (special tool #8807-2, Adapter) which is against the caliper piston. Do not over tighten the screw-drive. Damage to the piston can occur. 
    6. Turn Rear Caliper Piston Retractor (special tool #8807-2, Adapter) with the ratchet, rotating the piston in a clockwise  direction until fully seated (bottomed) in the bore. It may be necessary to turn Rear Caliper Piston Retractor  (special tool #8807-1, Assembly, Forcing Screw)with Rear Caliper Piston Retractor  (special tool #8807-2, Adapter)to start the process of piston retraction. 
    NOTE:

    Place the brake pad with the audible wear indicator attached on the inboard side. The audible wear indicator should be positioned at the bottom when installed. 

  2. Slide the outboard brake pad in the abutment shims clipped into the caliper adapter bracket.
  3. Place the inboard brake pad in the abutment shims. Be sure that both pads are bottomed in their shims.
    CAUTION:

    Use care when installing the caliper onto the adapter bracket to avoid damaging the guide pin boot.

    NOTE:

    There is a small post on the lower backside of the inboard pad. Make sure that this post lines up with one of the slots on the piston to ensure the pad interfaces with the piston correctly.

  4. Install the disc brake caliper over the brake rotor and caliper adapter.
  5. Install the disc brake caliper guide pin bolts (3). While holding the slide pins stationary, tighten the guide pin bolts to 34 N.m (25 ft. lbs.).
  6. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to INSTALLATION .
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Pump the brake pedal several times to ensure the vehicle has a firm brake pedal before moving the vehicle.
  9. Road test the vehicle and make several stops to wear off any foreign material on the brakes and to seat the brake pads.
