NOTE:

This procedure should be performed on an alignment rack.

  1. Using a transmission jack, raise the rear axle assembly into position, using the marks that were made before removing the axle.
  2. Install three mounting bolts (2) per side to secure the axle mounting brackets to the vehicle. Tighten the bolts so that they are snug, but not tightened to specification.

    NOTE:

If the spring is being replaced, the colors and pattern on the part tag of the coil spring must match the part tag from the coil spring that was removed. The part tag must be installed to the top mount.

  3. Install coil spring (1), making sure that the "D" shape on the bottom of the coil spring matches the lower isolator and that the part tag is installed to the top mount.
  4. Position the shock absorber (3) in the vehicle and install the upper mounting bolt (2). Do not tighten the bolt to specification at this time.
  5. Using the transmission jack, raise the rear axle until the lower shock mounting bolt (4) can be installed. Do not tighten the bolt to specification at this time.
  6. Raise the axle until it is at approximately curb height, and tighten the upper mounting bolt (2) to 70 N.m (52 ft. lbs.), then tighten the lower mounting bolt (4) to 100 N.m (74 ft. lbs.).

    NOTE:

The spindle bolts have fastener adhesive on them and are required to be replaced with new bolts every time they are removed.

  7. Place the rear spindle in position and install four NEW  bolts (1) securing the spindle to the axle. Tighten the mounting bolts to 125 N.m (92 ft. lbs.).
  8. On vehicles equipped with antilock brakes, install the wheel speed sensor head in the spindle assembly. Install and tighten the mounting screw (2) to 7 N.m (62 in. lbs.).

  9. Slide the hub and bearing (4) onto the spindle (5).
  10. Install a NEW hub nut (1) and washer (2) on the spindle and tighten to 280 N.m (207 ft. lbs.).
  11. Install the brake rotor (3) and caliper assembly (6). Install and tighten the caliper adapter mounting bolts (7) to 57 N.m (42 ft. lbs.). Refer to ROTOR, BRAKE, INSTALLATION .

  16. Install brake line fitting (3) to caliper and tighten to 17 N.m (150 in. lbs.).
  17. Connect parking brake cable (2) to caliper.
  18. Install rear wheels. Refer to INSTALLATION .
  19. Lower vehicle.

  23. Look under vehicle and ensure that the parking brake actuating lever (1) has not lifted off of the parking brake stop (2) on both sides of the vehicle.
  24. If lever is off of the stop, it will be necessary to go back inside the vehicle and loosen the adjuster nut.
  25. Once there is tension on the parking brake cables and both actuating levers are still on their resting tabs, actuate the parking brake to ensure that it is functioning properly.
  26. Install the floor console. Refer to CONSOLE, FLOOR, INSTALLATION .

  27. Ensure that the vehicle is at normal ride height by performing the curb height measurement procedure. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  28. Verify the alignment is within specifications by performing a wheel alignment. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  29. If the rear thrust angle is only slightly out of specification, the rear suspension location can be adjusted slightly. Loosen the axle mounting bolts (2) and perform one of the following:
    1. For high negative thrust, move the left side of the axle forward and the right rearward.
    2. For high positive thrust, move the right side of the axle forward and the left rearward.
  30. Tighten the three axle assembly mounting bolts (2) to 80 N.m (59 ft. lbs.) on each side of the vehicle.
