Relay, Defogger: Description
The relay (1) for the rear window defogger system, also known as the Electric Back Light (EBL), is an International Standards Organization (ISO) type relay. Relays conforming to ISO specifications have common physical dimensions, current capacities, terminal functions and patterns. The EBL relay is a electromechanical device that switches battery current through a fuse in the Power Distribution Center (PDC) to the rear window defogger grid. The EBL relay is energized when the relay coil is provided a ground path by the control circuitry within the Body Control Module (BCM).
The EBL relay is located in the PDC, in the engine compartment.
If the BCM has the following DTC active or stored; check the wiring for shorts. Repair as needed.
- B101E-19 - REAR WINDOW DEFROST RELAY DRIVER - OVER CURRENT - The relay actuation can be checked diagnostically using the scan tool. Find the BCM control menu to actuate the relay in the PDC; this diagnostic actuation only requires that the ignition is in Run and the scan tool is communicating with the BCM. If you cannot hear the relay "click" on and off, repair the open wire/connection. Check for intermittent connections by tugging on the applicable connectors and wire harness.
