Sunroof Operation

The hard wired circuits between components related to the operation of the power sunroof system may be diagnosed using conventional diagnostic tools and procedures. Refer to the appropriate wiring information. The wiring information includes wiring diagrams, proper wire and connector repair procedures, details of wire harness routing and retention, connector pin-out information and location views for the various wire harness connectors, splices and grounds.

However, conventional diagnostic methods will not prove conclusive in the diagnosis of the electronic module integral to the power sunroof motor. If the power sunroof switches, motors and circuitry test okay, but the express or Excess Force Limitation (EFL) features are still ineffective following the initialization procedure, the motor and module unit must be replaced.

NOTE:

FF Cabrio models (full sky slider system; soft top), the speed of the vehicle will be limited when the sky slider is in the full open position; 80 mph is the limit. To close the unit, the vehicle must be under 60 mph (a notification will appear in the cluster). 

If the power convertible top does not operate in the Auto Opening/Closing mode (automatically opening / closing to the one-quarter open and three-quarter open comfort stops), or if the remote keyless power top function is inoperable, or if the trunk lid does not open - the following relearn procedure may be necessary.

NOTE: DO NOT interrupt this activity. 

  1. Confirm that the door/trunk lid are closed.
  2. Begin with the top in the fully closed position (using manual mode).
  3. Hold the OPEN button to move the top to the fully open position.
  4. CONTINUE to hold the OPEN button for an additional three seconds.
  5. Release the OPEN button.
  6. Hold the CLOSED button to move the top to the fully closed position.
  7. CONTINUE to hold the CLOSED button until the top begins to cycle fully open, then release the CLOSED button.

At the end of step 7 the top will automatically cycle to the fully open position, and then close to the 1/4 open position. This will confirm that the relearn procedure was successful.

CONDITION POSSIBLE CAUSES CORRECTION
POWER SUNROOF COMPLETELY INOPERATIVE 1. Ineffective ground circuit. 1. Test and repair the open sunroof motor ground circuit if required.
2. Ineffective feed circuit. 2. Test and repair the open sunroof motor feed circuit if required.
3. Ineffective sunroof switch. 3. Test and replace the sunroof switch if required.
4. Ineffective sunroof motor and module unit. 4. Replace the sunroof motor and module unit if required.
AUDIBLE WHINE WHEN POWER SUNROOF SWITCH IS ACTUATED 1. Binding drive cable. 1. Replace the binding drive cable if required.
2. Ineffective sunroof motor and module unit. 2. Replace the sunroof motor and module unit if required.
AUDIBLE CLICKING OR RATCHETING WHEN POWER SUNROOF SWITCH IS ACTUATED 1. Improperly adjusted sliding glass panel. 1. Adjust the sunroof glass panel if required. Refer to GLASS, SUNROOF, INSTALLATION .
2. Damaged or worn drive cable. 2. Replace the broken or worn drive cable if required.
3. Damaged or worn motor drive gear. 3. Replace the sunroof motor and module unit if required.
POWER SUNROOF OPENS BUT DOES NOT CLOSE 1. Damaged or disengaged trough guide. 1. Replace or reinstall trough guide if required.
2. Binding drive cable. 2. Replace the binding drive cable if required.
3. Ineffective CLOSE circuit. 3. Repair the sunroof CLOSE circuit between the switch and the motor if required.
4. Ineffective sunroof switch. 4. Test and replace the sunroof switch (overhead console assembly) if required.
5. Ineffective sunroof motor and module unit. 5. Replace the sunroof motor and module unit if required.
POWER SUNROOF CLOSES BUT DOES NOT OPEN 1. Binding drive cable. 1. Replace the binding drive cable if required.
2. Ineffective OPEN circuit. 2. Repair the sunroof OPEN circuit between the switch and the motor if required.
3. Ineffective sunroof switch. 3. Test and replace the sunroof switch (overhead console assembly) if required.
4. Ineffective sunroof motor and module unit. 4. Replace the sunroof motor and module unit if required.
POWER SUNROOF GLASS MOVEMENT INCONSISTENT - NOT SMOOTH AND UNIFORM 1. Improperly adjusted sliding glass panel. 1. Adjust the sunroof glass panel if required. Refer to GLASS, SUNROOF, INSTALLATION .
