Diagnostic Test
- CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs. Copy DTC and Freeze Frame information.
- Start the engine and allow it to idle.WARNING:
When the engine is operating, do not stand in direct line with the fan. Do not put your hands near the pulleys, belts or fan. Do not wear loose clothing. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
NOTE:Attempt to operate the vehicle under conditions similar to which the DTC was set.
NOTE:It may be necessary to test drive the vehicle within the DTC monitoring conditions in order for this DTC to set.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs and record on the repair order.
Is the DTC active or pending?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Go To 9
- CHECK THE (K44) CMP SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Turn the ignition on.
- Disconnect the CMP Sensor harness connector.
- Measure the voltage on the (K44) CMP Sensor Signal circuit at the CMP Sensor harness connector.
Is the voltage above 5.2 volts?
Yes
- Repair the (K44) CMP Sensor Signal circuit for a short to voltage.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 3
- CHECK FOR THE (K44) CMP SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO THE (F856) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT
- Turn the ignition off.
- Check for continuity between the (K44) CMP Sensor Signal circuit and the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit at the CMP Sensor harness connector.
Is there continuity between the (K44) CMP Sensor Signal circuit and the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit?
Yes
- Repair the short between the (K44) CMP Sensor Signal circuit and the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 4
- CHECK THE (K44) CMP SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Measure the resistance of the (K44) CMP Sensor Signal circuit between the CMP Sensor harness connector and the PCM C2 harness connector.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 5
No
- Repair the (K44) CMP Signal circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (K900) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Measure the resistance of the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit between the CMP Sensor harness connector and the PCM C2 harness connector.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 6
No
- Repair the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK FOR THE BROKEN TIMING BELT BEING BROKEN OR MISSING TEETH NOTE:
The camshaft signal alternates low/high. If the belt is broken or has missing teeth at the Crankshaft Timing Gear the Crankshaft will turn while the Camshaft is not. This can cause the CMP Signal to be stuck low or high depending on the position of the Camshaft Tone Wheel in relation to the CMP Sensor.
- Verify that the Timing Belt is connected and turning the Camshaft when the engine is cranking.
Is the Camshaft turning when the engine is cranking?
Yes
- Go To 7
No
- Replace or repair the Timing Belt and engine mechanical timing.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Verify that the Timing Belt is connected and turning the Camshaft when the engine is cranking.
- REPLACE THE CMP SENSOR AND RETEST FOR DTCS
- Turn the ignition off.
- Replace the CMP Sensor in accordance with the service information. Refer to SENSOR, CAMSHAFT POSITION .
- Connect the CMP Sensor and PCM) harness connectors.
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
- Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 10.0 seconds.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Using the When Monitored and Set Conditions above and recorded data, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 8
No
- Replacing the CMP Sensor repaired the fault.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK RELATED PCM AND COMPONENT CONNECTIONS
- Perform any Service Bulletins that apply.
- Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Reconnect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Reconnect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Reconnect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in accordance with the service information. Refer to MODULE, POWERTRAIN CONTROL (PCM), REMOVAL .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- The wiring or poor connection problem has been repaired.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- ERRATIC CMP SENSOR SIGNAL
- Using a lab scope, back probe the CMP Sensor Signal circuit in the CMP harness connector.WARNING:
When the engine is operating, do not stand in direct line with the fan. Do not put your hands near the pulleys, belts or fan. Do not wear loose clothing. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Wiggle the related wire harness and lightly tap the Camshaft Position Sensor.
- Observe the lab scope screen.
- Allow the engine to idle.
- Observe the lab scope screen.
Did the CMP Sensor generate any erratic pulses?
Yes
- Verify that there is good pin to terminal contact in the CMP Sensor and the Powertrain Control Module connectors. If OK, inspect the Camshaft tone wheel for irregularities. If the tone wheel is distorted replace the Camshaft in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to CAMSHAFT, ENGINE, REMOVAL . If no problems were found with the tone wheel, replace the Camshaft Position Sensor in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT CONDITION .
- Using a lab scope, back probe the CMP Sensor Signal circuit in the CMP harness connector.
