The engine boost system features a fixed geometry turbocharger (1) managed by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Control of the supercharging is provided by means of a turbo wastegate solenoid valve (4) that regulates the turbocharger mounted wastegate actuator (2) and a separate surge valve (3) integrated in the turbocharger to prevent overpressure.
The turbocharger consists of turbine housing and a compressor housing separated by a center housing:
- The center housing supports the rotating group on ball bearings.
- The rotating group includes the compressor wheel and the turbine wheel.
- The center housing receives lubricating oil at the top, while the oil flow exits from the bottom.
- The turbocharger center housing also provides a coolant inlet and outlet to control operating temperature.
The engine cooling system is equipped with an additional electric pump, whose purpose is allowing the coolant to circulate through the turbocharger when the engine is switched off.
