Jump Starting Procedure (12V Battery Only)

1. On the disabled vehicle, remove the battery lid and inspect the battery.
   • Inspect the battery cable terminal clamps for damage. Replace any battery cable that has a damaged or deformed terminal clamp.
   • Inspect the battery tray and battery hold down hardware for damage. Replace any damaged parts.
   • Slide the thermal guard off of the battery case, if equipped. Inspect the battery case for cracks or other damage that could result in electrolyte leaks. Also, check the battery terminal posts for looseness. Batteries with damaged cases or loose terminal posts must be replaced.
   • Inspect the battery thermal guard for tears, cracks, deformation or other damage. Replace any battery thermal guard that has been damaged.
   • Inspect the battery built-in test indicator sight glass (if equipped) for an indication of the battery condition. If the battery is discharged, charge as required. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
     CAUTION:

     If the cause of starting problem on disabled vehicle is severe, damage to booster vehicle charging system can result.

2. When using another vehicle as a booster source, park the booster vehicle within cable reach. Turn off all accessories, set the parking brake, place the transmission in PARK and turn the ignition to LOCK.
3. On disabled vehicle, set the parking brake, place the transmission in PARK and turn the ignition to LOCK. Turn off the heater, radio, and all unnecessary electrical accessories.
4. Connect the positive (+) end of the jumper cable to the positive (+) post of the discharged vehicle.
5. Connect the opposite end of the positive (+) jumper cable to the positive (+) post of the booster battery.
6. Connect the negative end (-) of the jumper cable to the negative (-) post of the booster battery.
7. Connect the opposite end of the negative (-) jumper cable to a good engine ground (exposed metal part of the discharged vehicle underhood compartment) away from the battery.
8. Start the engine in the vehicle which has the booster battery, let the engine idle a few minutes, then turn the key to RUN position on the vehicle with the discharged battery. Once the vehicle is started, remove the jumper cables in the reverse sequence.
9. Disconnect the negative (-) jumper cable from the engine ground (-) of the vehicle with the discharged battery.
10. Disconnect the negative (-) end of the jumper cable from the negative (-) post of the booster battery.
11. Disconnect the opposite end of the positive (+) jumper cable from the positive (+) post of the booster battery.
12. Disconnect the positive (+) end of the jumper cable from the positive (+) post of the discharged vehicle.

If frequent jump starting is required to start the vehicle, inspect the battery and charging system.
