Housing, HVAC: Removal: Housing-HVAC

WARNING:

Disable the airbag system before attempting any steering wheel, steering column or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery (ground) cable. Wait two minutes for the airbag system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the airbag system. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

Review the warnings and cautions for this system before performing the procedure. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious injury or death.

WARNING:

On vehicles equipped with the high voltage system, disconnecting the 12-volt battery negative cable alone will not power down the 12-volt system. You must perform the 12-volt Power Down procedure before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

  1. Disconnect and isolate the 12-Volt negative battery cable.
  2. Power down the high-voltage system. Refer to ELECTRIC VEHICLE CONTROL SYSTEM, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  3. Remove the electric motor trim cover.

  4. Recover the refrigerant from the refrigerant system. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE  .
  5. Remove the nuts (3) that secure the A/C suction line (2) and A/C liquid line (4) to the A/C expansion valve (1).
  6. Disconnect the A/C suction and liquid lines from the A/C expansion valve and remove and discard the O-ring seals.
  7. Install plugs in, or tape over the opened refrigerant line fittings and the expansion valve ports.

    Manual Temperature Control (MTC) shown. Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) similar.

  8. Using Trim Stick (special tool #C-4755, Trim Stick) or equivalent (3), disengage the retaining tabs that secure the control panel (1) to the A/C heater control and remove the control panel from the instrument panel (2).

  9. Remove the instrument panel center bezel. Refer to BEZEL, INSTRUMENT PANEL, CENTER, REMOVAL .
  10. Remove the four screws (2, 3, 5 and 6) that secure the A/C heater control (1) to the instrument panel cover (4).
  11. Remove the instrument panel cover. Refer to COVER, INSTRUMENT PANEL, REMOVAL .

  12. Disconnect the HVAC wire harness from the A/C heater control and remove the control. Refer to CONTROL, A/C AND HEATER, REMOVAL  .
  13. Remove the floor distribution ducts from each side of the HVAC housing. Refer to DUCT, FLOOR DISTRIBUTION, REMOVAL  .
  14. Remove the five nuts that secure the HVAC housing to the instrument panel support, at the locations shown.

  15. Remove the instrument panel support. Refer to PANEL, INSTRUMENT, REMOVAL .
  16. Disconnect the PTC heater wire harness connector.
  17. Disconnect the condensate drain hose (1) from the HVAC housing (3) and remove the HVAC housing from the vehicle.
  18. If required, remove the condensate drain hose from the floor panel (2).
