Diagnostic Test

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2015 Fiat 500. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. ACTIVE DTC 
    NOTE:

    If there are any Electric Coolant Pump Relay Control circuit, ASD/Main Relay or system voltage DTCs present, diagnose those DTCs before proceeding with this test procedure.

    1. Ignition on, engine not running.
    2. With the scan tool, select View DTCs. Copy DTC and Freeze Frame information and clear DTCs.
      NOTE:

      Active or pending DTCs may not allow Electric Coolant Pump Relay actuation, make sure all DTCs are cleared before proceeding with this test procedure.

    3. With the scan tool, actuate the Electric Coolant Pump Relay.
    4. With the scan tool, select View DTCs.

      Is the DTC active or pending?

      Yes 

      • Go To  2

      No 

  2. CHECK THE ELECTRIC COOLANT PUMP RELAY 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Replace the Electric Coolant Pump Relay with a known good relay.
    3. Turn the ignition on, engine not running.
    4. With the scan tool, actuate the Electric Coolant Pump Relay.
    5. Monitor the scan tool for at least two minutes.
    6. With the scan tool, select View DTCs.

      Is the DTC active or pending?

      Yes 

      • Go To  3

      No 

  3. CHECK THE (K548) ELECTRIC COOLANT PUMP OUTPUT CIRCUIT 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the Electric Coolant Pump harness connector.
    3. Remove the Electric Coolant Pump Relay from the Power Distribution Center (PDC).
    4. Connect a jumper between terminal 30 and terminal 87 at the Electric Coolant Pump Relay connector.
    5. Turn the ignition on.
    6. Using a 12 volt test light connected to ground, probe the (K548) Electric Coolant Pump Output circuit at the Electric Coolant Pump harness connector.
      NOTE:

      The 12 volt test light should be illuminated and bright as compared to the connection of direct Battery.

      Is the 12 volt test light illuminated and bright?

      Yes 

      • Go To  5

      No 

      • Go To  4
  4. CHECK THE (K548) ELECTRIC COOLANT PUMP OUTPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN OR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Remove the jumper from between terminal 30 and terminal 87 at the Electric Coolant Pump Relay connector.
    3. Disconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
    4. Measure the resistance of the (K548) Electric Coolant Pump Output circuit between the Electric Coolant Pump harness connector and the Electric Coolant Pump Relay connector (terminal 87).

      Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Repair the (K548) Electric Coolant Pump Relay Output circuit for an open or high resistance. If the fuse is blown, check the circuit for a short to ground.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST, 16V Turbo .
  5. CHECK THE (K333) ELECTRIC COOLANT PUMP SIGNAL CIRCUIT 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Reconnect the Electric Coolant Pump harness connector.
    3. Disconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
    4. Turn the ignition on.
    5. Measure the voltage of the (K333) Electric Coolant Pump Signal circuit at the PCM C1 harness connector.

      Is the voltage above 3.5 volts?

      Yes 

      • Go To  8

      No 

      • Go To  6
  6. CHECK THE (K333) ELECTRIC COOLANT PUMP SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the Electric Coolant Pump harness connector.
    3. Measure the resistance of the (K333) Electric Coolant Pump Signal circuit between the Electric Coolant Pump harness connector the PCM C1 harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  7

      No 

  7. CHECK THE (K333) ELECTRIC COOLANT PUMP SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    1. Measure the resistance between ground and the (K333) Electric Coolant Pump Signal circuit at the Electric Coolant Pump harness connector.

      Is the resistance above 10k Ohms?

      Yes 

      No 

  8. POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) 
    1. Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the Electric Coolant Pump and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
    2. Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched or partially broken wires.
    3. Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals. Verify that there is good pin to terminal contact in the related connectors.
    4. Perform any Technical Service Bulletins that may apply.

      Were any problems found?

      Yes 

      No
