Diagnostic Test

- ACTIVE DTC
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Does the scan tool display this DTC as active?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT CONDITION .
- LOW RADIATOR FAN RELAY
- Turn the ignition off.
- Remove the Low Radiator Fan Relay from the PDC.
- Turn the ignition on, engine not running.
- With a scan tool, select Low Radiator Fan Relay Control State, Toggle, to actuate the Cooling Fan.
- Using a 12-volt test light connected to battery voltage, probe the (K173) Low Radiator Fan Relay Control circuit in the Low Radiator Fan Relay terminal.
Does the test light illuminate brightly and flash on and off during the actuation?
Yes
- Replace the Low Radiator Fan Relay.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST, 16V Turbo .
No
- Go To 3
- CHECK THE (K173) LOW RADIATOR FAN RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
- Turn the ignition on, engine not running.
- Measure the voltage in the (K173) Low Radiator Fan Relay Control circuit at the PCM C1 harness connector.
Is there any voltage present?
Yes
- Repair the short to voltage in the (K173) Low Radiator Fan Relay Control circuit.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST, 16V Turbo .
No
- Go To 4
- CHECK THE (K173) LOW RADIATOR FAN RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Measure the resistance in the (K173) Low Radiator Fan Relay Control circuit from the PCM C1 harness connector to the relay terminal.
Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 5
No
- Repair the (K173) Low Radiator Fan Relay Control circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST, 16V Turbo .
- POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)
- Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the Low Radiator Fan Relay and the Powertrain Control Module.
- Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched, or partially broken wires.
- Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals.
- Perform any Technical Service Bulletins that may apply.
Were any problems found?
Yes
- Repair as necessary.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST, 16V Turbo .
No
- Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in accordance with the service information. Refer to MODULE, POWERTRAIN CONTROL, REMOVAL .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST, 16V Turbo .
