Housing, HVAC: Installation: Housing-HVAC

NOTE:

When equipped with Manual Temperature Control (MTC), all the gear to gear contact points and the cable levers on the back of the A/C heater control should be adequately lubricated using Silicone Grease, available through Mopar. Lubrication should be performed if there is a concern or complaint of linkage chatter, grinding, or other movement derived noises that are detectable in the cabin.

NOTE:

A/C equipped model shown. Heater only model similar.

NOTE:

If the foam seal on the air inlet housing is deformed or damaged, the seal must be replaced.

NOTE:

Replacement of the O-ring seals is required anytime a refrigerant line or A/C expansion valve is disconnected. Failure to replace the O-ring seals may result in a refrigerant system leak.

  1. Install the HVAC housing (3) to the dash panel.
  2. If removed, install the condensate drain tube (1) into the floor panel (2). Be sure the outlet of the tube faces the rear of the vehicle.
  3. Connect the condensate drain tube to the HVAC housing.

  4. Install the instrument panel support. Refer to PANEL, INSTRUMENT, INSTALLATION .
  5. Install the five nuts that secure the HVAC housing to the instrument panel support, at the locations shown. Tighten the nuts to 4 N.m (35 in. lbs.).
  6. Install the floor distribution ducts onto each side of the HVAC housing. Refer to DUCT, FLOOR DISTRIBUTION, REMOVAL .

  7. When equipped with ATC, position the AC heater control (1) to the instrument panel support and connect the HVAC wire harness connector to the control. Refer to CONTROL, A/C AND HEATER, INSTALLATION .
  8. Install the instrument panel cover. Refer to COVER, INSTRUMENT PANEL, INSTALLATION .
  9. Install the four screws (2, 3, 5 and 6) that secure the A/C heater control to the instrument panel cover (4). Tighten the screws securely.
  10. Install the instrument panel center bezel. Refer to BEZEL, INSTRUMENT PANEL, CENTER, INSTALLATION .

  11. When equipped with MTC, lightly lubricate the control shafts to housing contact points on the front of the A/C heater control (1) using Silicone Grease, available through Mopar, and turn all of the control shafts (3) on the A/C heater control to the full clockwise position.

  12. When equipped with MTC, lightly lubricate the control knobs to control panel contact points on the back of the panel using Silicone Grease, available through Mopar and turn all of the control knobs on control panel (1) to the full clockwise position.

    CAUTION:

    When equipped with MTC, proper alignment of the control knobs to the shafts on the A/C heater control is critical for reassembly. The knobs and shafts must be clocked correctly to each other or damage to the A/C heater control will result during reassembly.

  13. Install the A/C heater control panel. Refer to CONTROL, A/C AND HEATER, INSTALLATION .

  14. Remove the tape or plugs from the opened refrigerant line fittings and the expansion valve ports.
  15. Lubricate new O-ring seals with clean refrigerant oil and install them onto the refrigerant line fittings. Use only the specified seals as they are made of a special material for the system. Use only refrigerant oil of the type recommended for the A/C compressor in the vehicle.
  16. Connect the A/C liquid line (4) and the A/C suction line (2) to the A/C expansion (1).
  17. Install the nuts (3) that secure the A/C liquid and suction lines to the A/C expansion valve. Tighten the nuts to 20 N.m (15 ft. lbs.).

  18. Remove the plugs or tape from the heater core tubes.
  19. Lubricate the O-ring seals in the two heater hose connectors (1 and 3) with clean engine coolant and connect them to the heater core tubes. Make sure the two retaining tabs (2) in each connector are fully engaged to the tubes.
  20. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  21. If the heater core is being replaced, flush the cooling system. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  22. Refill the engine cooling system. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  23. Evacuate and charge the refrigerant system. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE  .
  24. Install the engine trim cover.
