Hub And Bearing: Installation: Installation

CAUTION:

When installing the wheel bearing (1) in the knuckle (2) it is important to place the side of bearing with the wheel speed sensor magnetic encoder ring (dark band) (3) facing inboard. Otherwise, the wheel speed sensor will not operate correctly.

  1. Place the knuckle (2) into arbor press, making sure that it is level on the press blocks.
  2. Place the NEW wheel bearing (3) into the bore of the knuckle so that the magnetic encoder ring is visible (facing up). Be sure the wheel bearing is placed squarely into the bore.
  3. Install the wheel bearing into the knuckle using (special tool #6761, Installer, Ball Joint) (1) until the bearing is bottomed in the bore of the knuckle.

  4. Install a NEW  snap ring (2) in the knuckle (1) using an appropriate pair of snap ring pliers. Make sure the snap ring is fully seated.

  5. Place the knuckle (4) in an arbor press supporting the knuckle from underneath using (special tool #8417, Adapter) (3)
  6. Place the hub (2) in the wheel bearing making sure it is square with the bearing inner race.
  7. Install hub (2) in knuckle using (special tool #C-4171, Driver Handle, Universal) (1) and (special tool #9768, Remover, Bearing) (not visible) until it is bottomed in the bore of the knuckle.
  8. Remove the knuckle and tools from the arbor press.
