Hub And Bearing: Removal: Removal

NOTE:

The removal and installation of the wheel bearing and hub from the knuckle is only to be done with the knuckle removed from the vehicle.

  1. Remove the steering knuckle from the vehicle. Refer to KNUCKLE, STEERING, REMOVAL  .
  2. Remove the three dust shield mounting bolts and remove the dust shield.
  3. Install knuckle (1) into an arbor press, making sure the knuckle is level and supported by spacer blocks (2).
  4. Press the hub out of the knuckle (1) using Driver Handle (special tool #C-4171, Driver Handle, Universal) (4) and Bearing Remover (special tool #9768, Remover, Bearing) (3).

  5. Remove the snap ring (2) from the knuckle (1) using an appropriate pair of snap ring pliers.

  6. Install knuckle (2) into the press, making sure the knuckle is level and supported by spacer blocks (3).
  7. Press the bearing out of the knuckle using (special tool #8975-2, Cup, Remover) (1).

  8. If the bearing race is still pressed onto the hub, install the (special tool #1130, Splitter, Bearing/Gear) (3) between the hub flange and the bearing inner race.
  9. Place the hub, bearing race and Bearing Splitter in an arbor press. The press support blocks must not obstruct the wheel hub while it is being pressed out of the bearing race.
  10. Insert (special tool #C-4171, Driver Handle, Universal) (1) into (special tool #9768, Remover, Bearing) (2), and install in the end of the hub. Lower the arbor press ram and remove the hub from the bearing race.
