Standard Procedure - Main Bearing Identification And Selection
There are two different methods used to identify the crankshaft and the engine block when referencing the main bearing journals. The Termoli built engines use numbers etched onto the crankshaft flange and the engine ID (barcode) tag. The Dundee Engine Plant (DEP) uses letters etched onto the crankshaft flange and the cylinder block. It is very important to determine the engine and crankshaft origin to properly select the bearing codes. Either crankshaft can be installed in either engine however, because of the different methods used, care must be taken to follow the examples and the chart (table) to prevent the wrong bearings from being installed.

Crankshaft main bearing journal diameter grade markings correspond to specific journal diameters. The chart identifies the 19 crankshaft grade markings and their associated journal diameters.
Termoli engine block main bearing bore diameter grade markings are on a label affixed to the rear face of the block (1).

These markings are read from left to right, corresponding with crankshaft main bearing journal number 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. There are a total of ten digits. Two digits per bearing journal. In the red example the first two digits are 18 so main number one is represented by the number 18. The next two digits are 05 so main number two is represented by the number 05. The next two digits are 07 so main number three is represented by the number 07.
To access the information on the barcode (1), the transmission and the engine must be separated for both the ATX and manual transmission equipped vehicles. The adapter further obstructs the tag (1) on ATX equipped vehicles. The flex plate (3) and the adapter (2) must also be removed on ATX equipped vehicles to read the tag.
Dundee engine block main bearing journal diameter grade markings (1) are etched on the right face of the engine block near the intake manifold.
These marks are read from front to rear (right to left) corresponding with journal number 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Main number one is E, main number 2 is F, main number three is G.
Engine block main bearing bore grade markings correspond to specific bore diameters. The chart below identifies the 14 engine block grade markings and their associated bore diameters.

For upper and lower main bearing selection, obtain the grade identification marks from the crankshaft and engine block. Main bearings are available in three sizes (red, blue, yellow). Upper and lower sizes can be mixed on a journal in order to achieve the desired oil clearance. The chart below identifies the three sizes available and how they should be selected based on crankshaft and engine block grade markings. The first letter in the sequence is the upper and the second letter is the lower. For example, if the chart shows that R/B is to be selected, install the RED in the main journal upper recess block end). Install the BLUE in the lower main journal cavity (cap end).

The main bearing shells are color coded (1) on the edge of the bearing. The bearings are available in three different sizes and can be mixed on a journal in order to achieve the proper oil clearance.
