Diagnostic Test

- CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Does the scan tool display this DTC as active?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT CONDITION .
- CHECK THE (F343) FUSED ASD RELAY OUTPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the Ignition Coil 2 harness connector.
- Turn the ignition on, engine not running.
- With the scan tool, actuate the Auto Shutdown (ASD) Relay Control State.
- Using a 12-volt test light connected to ground, check the (F343) Fused ASD Relay Output circuit in the Ignition Coil 2 harness connector.NOTE:
The test light should be illuminated and bright. Compare the brightness to that of a direct connection to the battery.
Is the test light illuminated and bright?
Yes
- Go To 3
No
- Repair the (F343) Fused ASD Relay Output circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST
.CAUTION:
Stop all actuation tests before proceeding.
- IGNITION COIL
- Using a 12-volt test light connected to a 12-volt source, probe the (K17) Ignition Coil 2 Signal circuit.
- Crank the engine for five seconds while observing the test light.
What is the condition of the test light while cranking the engine?
Brightly blinking
- Replace the Ignition Coil in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to COIL, IGNITION, REMOVAL .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
ON constantly
- Go To 4
OFF constantly
- Go To 5
- CHECK THE (K17) IGNITION COIL 2 SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
- Check for continuity between ground and the (K17) Ignition Coil 2 Signal circuit at the Ignition Coil 2 harness connector.
Is there continuity between ground and the (K17) Ignition Coil 2 Signal circuit?
Yes
- Go To 6
No
- Repair the (K17) Ignition Coil 2 Signal circuit for a short to ground.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (K17) IGNITION COIL 2 SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
- Measure the resistance of the (K17) Ignition Coil 2 Signal circuit between the Ignition Coil 2 harness connector and the PCM C2 harness connector.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 6
No
- Repair the (K17) Ignition Coil 2 Signal circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Measure the resistance of the (K17) Ignition Coil 2 Signal circuit between the Ignition Coil 2 harness connector and the PCM C2 harness connector.
- POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)
- Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the Ignition Coil 2 and the Powertrain Control Module.
- Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched, or partially broken wires.
- Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals.
- Perform any Service Bulletins that may apply.
Were any problems found?
Yes
- Repair as necessary.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to MODULE, POWERTRAIN CONTROL, REMOVAL .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
