Diagnostic Test

- ACTIVE DTC
- Start the engine and allow it to idle.WARNING:
When the engine is operating, do not stand in direct line with the fan. Do not put your hands near the pulleys, belts, or fan. Do not wear loose clothing. Failure to follow these instructions can result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- With the scan tool, select View DTCs.
Is the DTC Active at this time?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT CONDITION .
- Start the engine and allow it to idle.
- VVA SOLENOID 1
- Turn the ignition off.
- Gain access to the VVA Solenoid 1.
- Disconnect the VVA Solenoid 1 harness connector.
- Using an Ohm meter, measure the resistance across the terminals of the VVA Solenoid.
Is the resistance between 0.5 and 1.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 3
No
- Replace the Variable Valve Actuator Assembly in accordance with the service information. Refer to ASSEMBLY, VARIABLE VALVE ACTUATION, REMOVAL .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST, 16V Turbo .
- CHECK FOR EXCESSIVE RESISTANCE IN THE (N32) VVA SOLENOID 1 SIGNAL CIRCUIT
- Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
- Measure the resistance of the (N32) VVA Solenoid 1 Signal circuit between the VVA Solenoid 1 harness connector and the PCM C2 harness connector.
Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 4
No
- Repair the excessive resistance in the (N32) VVA Solenoid 1 Signal circuit.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST, 16V Turbo .
- CHECK FOR EXCESSIVE RESISTANCE IN THE (N33) VVA SOLENOID 1 RETURN CIRCUIT
- Measure the resistance of the (N33) VVA Solenoid 1 Return circuit between the VVA Solenoid 1 harness connector and the PCM C2 harness connector.
Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 5
No
- Repair the excessive resistance in the (N33) VVA Solenoid 1 Return circuit.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST, 16V Turbo .
- Measure the resistance of the (N33) VVA Solenoid 1 Return circuit between the VVA Solenoid 1 harness connector and the PCM C2 harness connector.
- POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)
- Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the Solenoid and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
- Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched or partially broken wires.
- Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals. Verify that there is good pin to terminal contact in the Solenoid and the Powertrain Control Module harness connectors.
- Perform any Technical Service Bulletins that may apply.
Were there any problems found?
Yes
- Repair as necessary.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST, 16V Turbo .
No
- Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module in accordance with the service information. Refer to MODULE, POWERTRAIN CONTROL, REMOVAL .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST, 16V Turbo .
