Diagnostic Test

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC
    1. Start the engine and allow it to idle.
      WARNING:

When the engine is operating, do not stand in direct line with the fan. Do not put your hands near the pulleys, belts, or fan. Do not wear loose clothing. Failure to follow these instructions can result in possible serious or fatal injury.

    2. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Is the DTC active?

      Yes

      No

  2. CHECK THE (N36) VVA SOLENOID 3 SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Gain access to the VVA Solenoid 3.
    3. Disconnect the VVA Solenoid 3 harness connector.
      CAUTION:

Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to perform the diagnosis.

    4. Connect the (special tool #10436, Adapter, GPEC Diagnostic).
    5. Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
    6. Check for continuity between the (N36) VVA Solenoid 3 Signal circuit and all other circuits at the GPEC Adaptor.

Is there continuity between the (N36) VVA Solenoid 3 Signal circuit and any other circuit?

      Yes

      No

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK THE (N37) VVA SOLENOID 3 RETURN CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
    1. Check for continuity between the (N37) VVA Solenoid 3 Return circuit and all other circuits at the GPEC Adaptor.

Is there continuity between the (N37) VVA Solenoid 3 Return circuit and any other circuit?

      Yes

      No

      • Go To  4
  4. POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the Solenoid and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
    3. Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched or partially broken wires.
    4. Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals. Verify that there is good pin to terminal contact in the VVA Solenoid and the Powertrain Control Module harness connectors.
    5. Perform any Service Bulletins that may apply.

      Were there any problems found?

      Yes

      No
