Diagnostic Test

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC
    1. Start the engine and allow it to idle.
      WARNING:

When the engine is operating, do not stand in direct line with the fan. Do not put your hands near the pulleys, belts, or fan. Do not wear loose clothing. Failure to follow these instructions can result in possible serious or fatal injury.

    2. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

Is the DTC active or pending?

      Yes

      • Go To  2

      No

  2. CHECK THE VVA SOLENOID 2 FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the VVA Solenoid 2 harness connector.
    3. Check for continuity between ground and either terminal of the VVA Solenoid (component side).

Is there continuity between ground and either terminal of the VVA Solenoid?

      Yes

      • Replace the Variable Valve Actuator Assembly in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to ASSEMBLY, VARIABLE VALVE ACTUATION, REMOVAL . After replacing the Variable Valve Actuator Assembly, perform the "Adaptives After Block Change" procedure with the scan tool. This function should be run after a VVA Actuator has been installed to prevent a false failure by resetting the adaptive memory back to the base calibration.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST, 16V Turbo .

      No

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK THE (N34) VVA SOLENOID 2 SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
    1. Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
    2. Check for continuity between ground and the (N34) VVA Solenoid 2 Signal circuit at the VVA Solenoid 2 harness connector.

Is there continuity between ground and the (N34) VVA Solenoid 2 Signal circuit?

      Yes

      No

      • Go To  4
  4. CHECK THE (N35) VVA SOLENOID 2 RETURN CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
    1. Check for continuity between ground and the (N35) VVA Solenoid 2 Return circuit at the VVA Solenoid 2 harness connector.

Is there continuity between ground and the (N35) VVA Solenoid 2 Return circuit?

      Yes

      No

      • Go To  5
  5. POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)
    1. Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the VVA Solenoid and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
    2. Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched or partially broken wires.
    3. Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals. Verify that there is good pin to terminal contact in the Solenoid and the Powertrain Control Module harness connectors.
    4. Perform any Service Bulletins that may apply.

      Were there any problems found?

      Yes

      No
