Diagnostic Test

- ACTIVE DTC
- Start the engine and allow it to idle.WARNING:
When the engine is operating, do not stand in direct line with the fan. Do not put your hands near the pulleys, belts, or fan. Do not wear loose clothing. Failure to follow these instructions can result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- With the scan tool, select View DTCs.
Is the DTC Active at this time?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT CONDITION .
- Start the engine and allow it to idle.
- CHECK THE (N36) VVA SOLENOID 3 SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Gain access to the VVA Solenoid 3.
- Disconnect the VVA Solenoid 3 harness connector.
- Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
- Measure the resistance between the (N36) VVA Solenoid 3 Signal circuit and all other circuits at the PCM C2 harness connector.
Is resistance above 10k Ohms between the (N36) VVA Solenoid 3 Signal circuit and all other circuits?
Yes
- Go To 3
No
- Repair the (N36) VVA Solenoid 3 Signal circuit for a short to the circuit that measure below 10k Ohms.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (N37) VVA SOLENOID 3 RETURN CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Measure the resistance between the (N37) VVA Solenoid 3 Return circuit and all other circuits at the PCM C2 harness connector.
Is resistance above 10k Ohms between the (N37) VVA Solenoid 3 Return circuit and all other circuits?
Yes
- Go To 4
No
- Repair the (N37) VVA Solenoid 3 Return circuit for a short to the circuit that measure below 10k Ohms.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Measure the resistance between the (N37) VVA Solenoid 3 Return circuit and all other circuits at the PCM C2 harness connector.
- POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)
- Turn the ignition off.
- Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the Solenoid and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
- Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched or partially broken wires.
- Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals. Verify that there is good pin to terminal contact in the Solenoid and the Powertrain Control Module harness connectors.
- Perform any Technical Service Bulletins that may apply.
Were there any problems found?
Yes
- Repair as necessary.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module in accordance with the service information. Refer to MODULE, POWERTRAIN CONTROL, REMOVAL .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
