Standard Procedure - Engine Timing Verification

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the air cleaner body. Refer to BODY, AIR CLEANER, REMOVAL .
  3. Remove the upper timing belt cover. Refer to COVER(S), ENGINE TIMING, REMOVAL .
  4. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to BELT, SERPENTINE, REMOVAL .
  5. Remove the crankshaft vibration damper. Refer to DAMPER, VIBRATION, REMOVAL .
  6. Remove the lower timing belt cover. Refer to COVER(S), ENGINE TIMING, REMOVAL .
  7. Remove the right engine mount insulator and right engine mount bracket. Refer to INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNT, RIGHT, REMOVAL  .
  8. Remove the ignition coil(s). Refer to COIL, IGNITION, REMOVAL .
  9. Remove the cylinder head cover. Refer to COVER(S), CYLINDER HEAD, REMOVAL .

  10. Install the Camshaft Timing Template 2000004400 (1) to the rear of the camshaft.

  11. Install the Crankshaft Timing Template 2000004500 (1) to the crankshaft pulley.
  12. If the Crankshaft Timing Template does not align with the lower timing belt cover mounting boss, the camshaft timing is not correct. Proceed to the timing belt service procedures. Refer to BELT, TIMING, REMOVAL .
