Description & Operation
Vehicle is available with 4 types of brake systems. Standard brake system consists of front disc and rear drum brakes and is not available with ABS. The second brake system is 4-wheel disc brake system without ABS. The third brake system is 4-wheel disc brake system with ABS. The fourth brake system is 4-wheel disc brake system with ABS and traction control. Traction control is only used on models with ABS.
Standard brake equipment consists of following components:
- Automatic Adjusting Rear Drum Brakes
- Brake Fluid Level Sensor
- BRAKE Warning Light
- Double Pin Floating Caliper Front Disc Brakes
- Double Pin Floating Caliper Rear Disc Brakes On Some Models
- Master Cylinder
- Power Brake Booster
- Proportioning Valve
A diagonal split hydraulic brake system is used. Master cylinder primary circuit supplies pressure to right front and left rear brakes. Master cylinder secondary circuit supplies pressure to left front and right rear brakes. Parking brakes on models with rear drum brakes use service brake shoes operated by parking brake cables. Models equipped with rear disc brakes use a separate drum and parking brake shoes as a parking brake. Drum is located inside the rear brake rotor and has cable-operated parking brake shoes.
A Red BRAKE warning light is used with all brake systems. BRAKE warning light is located on instrument cluster, just below the tachometer. When ignition is first turned on, BRAKE warning light will come on as a bulb check and then go off. Application of parking brake or a signal from brake fluid level sensor may cause BRAKE warning light to remain on steady. Brake fluid level sensor is located on master cylinder fluid reservoir.
A proportioning valve is used for the rear brakes. Proportioning valve limits the pressure to the rear brakes to improve front-to-rear brake balance during normal braking.
